There
are dozens of herbs that will help to soothe the frayed, jangled
nerves, the edginess and tension, or the anxiety that can mean nights
of sleepless tossing and turning. None of them is truly
addictive, in the strict sense of the word, but no remendy that acts
upon the central nervous system should be taken for weeks on end, night
after night. If you become psychologically dependent for your
night's sleep upon any remedy, however safe, your original insomnia
problems remain unsolved.
Simple Natural Insomnia Remedies:
For occasional insomnia, here are some simple remedies to try:
Chamomile Tea. Infuse 2 teaspoons, covered, in a cupful of boiling water, or use a teabag.
Catnip Tea. Infuse a teaspoon of the herb, covered, in a cup of near-boiling water for ten minutes. Very tranquilizing.
Lemon Balm Tea. Use a teaspoon of the dried tea, or better
still a handful of fresh leaves, infused, covered, for 6 minutes in a
cupful of boiling water.
Other Insomnia Remedies:
For some people, a bedtime drink may mean waking only 2 to 3 hours
later for a trip to the bathroom. If this could be a problem, try
any of the following:
Make an extra strong infusion of Lime Flowers and Leaves, or
any of the herbs mentioned above, and pour into a warm bedtime bath
(bedtime baths should be warm rather than hot). For a marked
tranquilizing effect, add 2 or 3 drops of the essential oil Marjoram or
4 or 5 Lavender to the Lime Flowers bath and swish around with your hand. Lay in the bath for about 10 minutes, with your eyes closed, and head straight to bed.
Passion Flower
doesn't sound as though it ought to be good for promoting sweet sleep,
but it's one of the finest remedies for insomnia. Take tablets at
bedtime, washed down with one of the soothing herbal teas already
mentioned. Valerian is also one of the great natural tranquilizers, also available in tablet form.
Hops are
a reliable old country remedy for insomnia: try a teaspoon of the
papery heads infused, covered, for 10 minutes in a cupful of boiling
water, sweetened with a little honey.
Lime Flower Tea. A teaspoon of Lime Flowers infused in a cupful of boiling water is also effective at calming restless, nervous states of mind.
There are some excellent bedtime teas to be found in any health-food store, starring a number of these tranquilizing herbs.
