As
medical science continues to search for an ultimate cure for cancer,
the best thing the average person can do is take measures to prevent
it. Along with the obvious, i.e. stop smoking, don't spend too
much time in the sun, etc., there are natural foods and herbs available
to you that can hopefully help prevent this potentially deadly
affliction, some are even capable of slowing the growth of cancer cells:
Chaparral: Cancer Cells
Chaparral is also known as "Hediondilla" (in Spanish), "Creosote Bush", and Greasewood". The chemicals in Chaparral
retard the growth of other plants; in fact, few things will grow in the
immediate vicinity of a Chaparral bush. The plant also radiates
the unpleasant odor of creosote.
Despite Chaparral's unsavory reputation, many consider Chaparral to be a natural treatment for cancer. There have actually been stories of Chaparral curing cancer when all else failed, although these stories are not documented.
Chaparral can be taken as a tea, but powdering the dried plant
and putting it into capsules or making a tincture may be the best way
to take it, because some people find the creosote odor
objectionable. Two capsules or thirty drops of tincture at
bedtime is the usual dose. The tincture may go down better in a
little water or lime juice.
Research has been done on Chaparral to test its usefulness as a cancer treatment. The
results were inconclusive: About half the participants showed marked
improvement, the others deteriorated. The Food and Drug
Administration in the U.S. does not consider Chaparral to be safe at
this time, due to lack of official testing of the plant for medical
purposes.
Yucca: Skin Cancer, Cancer Cells
You can't picture the southwestern desert in the U.S. without the Yucca plant, yet Yucca grows in almost all of the United States. The medicine in the Yucca plant is
found in the root, which is usually dried for use. The dried root can
be pounded, a bit of water added, and a lather is formed when it is
rubbed. This substance is then used as a treatment for dandruff and/or
baldness. A treatment for skin can be made by pounding the dry
rock with a rock and boiling it in a small amount of water.
Grease is then added, and the mixture is cooled. This is reported
to work on skin problems (possibly even skin cancer), sprains and sores.
In the laboratory, a water of extract of Yucca root has proven effective against cancer in mice. Test have also shown a possible effectiveness against arthritis (Steven Foster and James A. Duke, Eastern/Central Medicinal Plants).
Brier: Slows Growth Of Cancer Cells
Brier, or Greenbrier, is considered to be a weed to
many. Native American Indians, however, recongnized it as a
source of medicine and food. It is now being studied by modern
science, and reportedly slows down the growth of cancer cells.
The roots of Brier are boiled and taken as a tea for arthritic
joints, itching, ulcers on the skin, and to aid in the delivery of the
afterbirth. The root decoction is also a treatment for cancer. Brier in this form is considered safe.
Nightshade: Skin Cancer
Nightshade has been used in Europe, and in North America by Indians and settlers alike as a natural cancer treatment for centuries. Today it is little used except externally, because it is not safe to ingest.
However, several Indian tribes once used the plant internally to treat
tuberculosis, to get rid of worms, or just as a blood cleanser. Nightshade was also considered an antispasmodic. It was given for fevers, eye problems, sleeplessness, and even rabies.
Nightshade salves were made and used for skin problems and sores by Indians and settlers alike. The Dispensatory of the United States 1836 suggests the use of the leaves externally to treat cancer and skin ulcers.
Oats: Colon Cancer
The oat is a food we connect to our childhood, and that follows us into old age. Oats have always been known as a healthy food, and we now know much more about its benefits. Oats are not only good to eat, but the whole plant makes good medicine.
The main use for oats though, has always been food. Oats
are easily digested and also provide fiber for the diet. Besides
this, they contain Vitamin B, Phosphorus, Iron, Aluminum, Potassium,
Manganese, Cobalt, and Vitamins A,D, and E. Oats have been found to
lower cholesterol and reduce the incidence of Colon Cancer.
