Every year more and more people are diagnosed as asthmatic, suffering the disabling and stressful symptoms of wheezing, difficulty in expelling air, painful tightness of the diaphragm and the struggle to breathe.  These may be due to inflammation of the mucous membrane lining the small air passages, which then swell, making breathing more difficult, or to a spasm of the diaphragm or the muscles in the bronchial area, which constricts the air passages to produce the same effect.  Mucus accumulates, and the spasm makes it difficult to cough this away.
Natural Cures For Asthma

A potentially life threatening disease, asthma calls for careful professional treatment, if possible from a qualified medical herbalist. He or she will certainly suggest radical changes in diet to improve general health and resistance, as well as prescribing herbs to deal with the distressing symptoms of asthma, and the anxiety they can engender.  Among the herbs that may be prescribed for you are Lobelia, Liquorice, and Angelica.  But it needs professional skill to sort out the various factors that have made you susceptible, and the herb that can be truly effective.  It is important to note that self medication should be limited to simple remedies that can help relax the patient and calm some of the distress.  Garlic and onions are superfoods for the asthmatic: eat plenty, for they will help guard your lungs against infection.

Aromatherapy As A Treatment For Asthma
You can also combine the following: basil, eucalyptus, hyssop, lavender and peppermint -  in an oil that can be inhaled from a hankerchief, vaporized into a room, or added to a bath.
Aromatic plants can be very helpful for the asthmatic. Three especially recommended by French aromatherapist Dr. Jean Valnet are scots pine, lavender, and rosemary.  All three are pulmonary antiseptics, and lavender also possesses antispasmodic properties.  So add 4 to 5 drops of any of these essential oils to a bath or to a hot footbath.  If you have any of these growing in your garden, a particularly strong infusion of thyme, lavender, rosemary, eucalyptus or marjoram - use a good handful of the plant in a couple of litres (4 to 5 pints) of boiling water - can be added to a bath, to relax both you and your bronchial system.  This treatment also helps with relieving stress and nervous tension.
