Every
year millions of people consult their doctors about arthritis
treatment, for the assorted aches and pains arising out of the inflamed
joint or muscle tissue of rheumatoid arthritis, and the progressive
degeneration of cartilage responsible for the stiffness and eventual
immobility of osteo-arthritis. Conventional treatment usually
involves powerful painkillers, and anti-inflammatories with nasty side
effects.
Causes Of Arthritis
In all forms of rheumatic disease, look for two main causes:
stress and tension which can disturb the delicate hormonal and chemical
balance of the system, and a poor diet laced with chemical additives
and deficient in the nutrients nedded for repair and maintenance of
healthy bones, joints and tissue. Some forms of arthritis are
triggered by injury to joints or spine, and may need treatment from a
qualified osteopath to correct the underlying lesion. Digestive
malfunction, leading to food and chemical sensitivities, is more and
more being seen as the culprit in many cases of arthritis.
Change Your Diet To Relieve Arthritis
Diet is one way to combat arthritis pain. Eat plenty of fresh
vegetables, salads, fruit, and sprouted seeds. Cut down on
cheese, red meat and eggs. Go to one of the many vegetarian
cookbooks available for ideas; vegetarians suffer much less from
degenerative diseases than dedicated meat eaters. Learn to love
seaweed (yes, seaweed!), a rich source of alkalizing minerals. Spinach and rhubard should both be avoided-both contain oxalic acid which will make matters worse. Cut out or drastically reduce tea
and coffee; cut out alcohol. Those with arthritis are often
advised to avoid citrus fruits, although other fruit is fine. Eat
wholewheat bread, brown rice rather than white, and as far as possible,
avoid processed foods high in additives, and sugar or artificial
sweeteners in any form. Drink plenty of good mineral water.
Natural Arthritis Treatment
A plant found in central southern Africa called Devil's Claw (lower right) has been found remarkably effective as an arthritis treatment.
In a number of trials conducted in Germany and France over the last two
decades, it has been shown to be effective. The dried and
powdered tubers are used; their action appears to be both detoxifying
and stimulating to the body's own immune system. No harmful
effects have shown up, even in high doses. (CAUTION:
Diabetics should warn their doctors if they are taking Devil's Claw: it
can significantly lower insulin requirements). Devil's Claw can
be bought in the form of tea, tablets, or in a tincture made from the
fresh plant, called Harpagophytum procumbeus, by Bioforce.
Celery is an old Romany arthritis treatment,
and scientific research has shown it to be an effective
anti-inflammatory, as well as a wonderful detoxifier. Eat plenty
of celery, fresh or made into soup; use celery seed or celery salt to
season soups and salads; or drink celery juice, a small glass twice a
day before meals. Celery seeds are a component of some of the
most effective herbal remedies for rheumatism on the market.
Nettles are highly effective for rheumatism.
Like celery, they are highly alkaline, and help counter excess acidity
in the system. They also contain iron and other useful vitamins
and minerals. Add the young tops to soups, or stew them as you
would spinach. If you have a good supply of nettles, put a
handful of them into a big pan of boiling water, simmer for ten
minutes, strain and add the liquid to your bath.
Naturally Improve Your Circulation
Poor circulation is often a factor in rheumatic problems. An excellent remedy for this is is the bark of the Prickly Ash tree,
a marvellous cleanser of the blood, highly prized by North American
Indians as a remedy for rheumatism and later adopted by white
settlers. Prickly ash is also a useful anti-inflammatory, and it is an ingredient of some of the most effective and popular herbal remedies.
Another herbal arthritis treatment that greatly improves circulation is Angelica.

Acupressure For Arthritis
Acupressure,
an alternative to acupuncture that does not involve needles, can also
be an effective treatment for arthritis. See the acupressure for arthritis pages for details.
